A linoprint, or lino cut, is a traditional relief printmaking technique. The medium came after the invention of linoleum in 1860, which was smoother and easier for artist’s hands than the tougher wood carving which came before it.
The process begins by carving a design into a linoleum block using a variety of carving tools sizes, in which you essentially create a large stamp.
The second part of the process involves rolling a thin layer of ink onto the remaining raised surface using a brayer, and carefully pressing or rolling the design onto paper, fabric, etc. The final product is a mirror image of the block, creating an interesting challenge for the artist.
For me, linoprinting is my meditation.
